What does it mean to be an “exploring” student? Many students feel pressured to choose a major quickly, even if they haven’t yet discovered their passion. In college, not declaring a major can feel intimidating rather than an opportunity to make a more informed decision.
At Mizzou, many students have found support through resources and advisors that guide them in choosing the right path and helping them make the most of their college experience. Senior communication major and former Summer Welcome Leader Joanne Kim of O’Fallon found her own success by taking advantage of these opportunities.
“The Discovery Center was very welcoming and helpful,” said Kim. “When I was officially assigned Kathleen as my academic advisor, she helped me narrow down which majors and minors I might be interested in.”
When Kim first arrived at Mizzou, she turned to the Discovery Center, which offers Student Success course as a part of Mizzou 101, for guidance on her academic focus while completing general education requirements alongside other students who were also exploring their options.
Kathleen Kerr provided support to students like Kim, offering advice on time management, organization, problem-solving, and navigating college life.
Kerr also guides students still searching for the right major by helping them sort through their options and eliminate those that may not be a good fit. Her advice helped Kim focus on her interests and unique skills, ultimately finding a major that suited her.
“I took both Student Success courses before declaring communication as my major. The first focused on learning about ourselves, our strengths, and which majors align with them,” said Kim. “We took the CliftonStrengths Finder assessment and used components of that to help us decide our major and career path.”
The CliftonStrengths Finder assessment is one of the tools the Discovery Center uses as a part of their collaboration with the MU Career Center to help students identify and develop the talents that have always been part of who they are. It supports both academic and personal growth.
“There was always so much excitement whenever someone declared a major. But, when it was finally my turn, I was sad–it meant I had to leave,” Kim said. “Leaving was hard because of how welcoming they were, but it was comforting to know that Kathleen was leaving me in good hands with my College of Arts and Science advisor.”
Since transitioning from the Discovery Center, Kim has continued to carve out her own path at Mizzou, turning every opportunity into success and leaving a meaningful mark on those around her. Now a senior, Kim stands on the edge of her next big chapter–hopeful, driven and ready for what’s ahead.
