Leading with heart: Tate McDaniel’s impact as a Peer Learning Assistant

By Alivia Roach

There are some who couldn’t be more deserving of the recognition they receive, and Tate McDaniel is one of them. As a Peer Learning Assistant (PLA) over the past three years for the Sport FIG, he has demonstrated strong leadership both in and out of the classroom.

Along with his leadership, he shows a deep empathy for his students and a strong dedication to their student. Some freshmen arrive in a FIG uncertain about their future or if they belong. Leaders like McDaniel can empathize with them and help guide them along their Mizzou journey, connecting with students in remarkable ways.

Because of McDaniel’s impact, students feel at ease and comfortable enough to approach him at campus events. When they’re around him, they describe feeling valued, seen and welcomed. He provides a sense of belonging that stems from his intentional and compassionate leadership style.

As he leads, McDaniel emphasizes integrity, punctuality and growth mindset, always searching for innovative ways to expand and improve the FIG experience for new Mizzou students.

Now approaching graduation, he continues to support and invest his time in the students, offering intentional mentorship and guidance, so that those who follow can build on his example. His associates hope the same environment that he creates – one where every voice is heard and respected, and where meaningful and thought-provoking conversations can thrive––continues to inspire future leaders as he did.
