What is your role on campus?
I serve as the director of the MU Veterans Center. I help support our military-connected students across the University of Missouri. A military-connected student could be currently serving in the military, a veteran or the spouse or dependent of someone in military.
When did Mizzou start offering services for veteran students on campus?
The University of Missouri has supported veterans all the way back to World War II when the original GI Bill came into existence. We’ve offered support in one fashion or another to ensure veterans could use their benefits and to help them adjust to campus life.
You help students from admissions to graduation. What does that support look like?
It’s important to help our military-connected students adjust to campus life because many of them come from a military environment – they aren’t the traditional student. They may have come right out of high school and had a break from the academic setting. Maybe they’ve served their country and are just now coming into an academic environment, and they are older than the average student. They might be married and have another job. Some are still serving in a part-time or full-time status, and they’re trying to incorporate studies in their life now. We focus on helping them get through their studies and graduate in the career field of their choice.
Can you talk about the Post 9/11 GI Bill® and how it is an asset to students who have served?
The Post 9/11 GI Bill® is the best GI Bill to date. It came about after the unfortunate events of 9/11. One of the remarkable things about it is that it can provide anywhere up to 100% of tuition. The Post 9/11 GI Bill® also provides up to 100% housing benefits, a book allowance and can assist with other fees. It’s also transferable under certain conditions to family members. We have many students utilizing benefits transferred to them by their parents.
What are some common misconceptions students may have about this office?
I would say that you can only come if you are using your GI Bill® or military tuition assistance. We’re really here to support our military-connected students, connect them to resources and be a friend. We have a great veterans lounge. We host events and activities throughout the year. We want them to know that they’re not alone; we are here.
How can students get in touch to learn more?
Come visit us in Memorial Union. We’re in N5 in the north tower on the lower level. We are open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. They can also call or e-mail us. We also have virtual options because we know everybody is not able to make it in here. Our number is 573-884-4383, if they want to e-mail us, they can do it at veterans@missouri.edu.
What are some important things to look for on your website?
Students can go to veterans.missouri.edu. There they can learn about their benefits, different activities at Mizzou, policies that affect military-connected students, scholarship opportunities and connect with our social media accounts.
