The MU Office of Undergraduate research hosted “Night at the Museum(s)” on Wednesday July 17 at the Museum of Art and Archeology and the Museum of Anthropology. Attendees participated in scavenger hunts discovering the artwork and artifacts displayed in the museum. The program was an educational and community building opportunity for student researchers participating in the Summer Undergraduate Research Program.

Throughout the summer, additional educational programming outside of research programming like Night at the Museum encourages curiosity among participants outside of their individual programs. Other community building events included a team strategy night at Hexagon Alley and a visit to Laws Observatory. These events offer the summer researchers a chance to participate in engaging activities while fostering connections with their mentors and other students from Mizzou and other institutions.

“Coming to Mizzou was a big change,” said Sierra Papa, a senior at Grand Valley State University in Michigan. “Since, I began working in the lab, I’ve practiced new techniques, learned how to present my research more professionally and built connections I never expected.”

Allyson Barraza, a doctoral student at MU is conducting research this summer in psychology, specifically interpersonal relationships. As a graduate student mentor, she emphasized the importance of her role in the success of undergraduate researchers.

“We want to open doors of opportunity, help build communities and make sure we stay connected,” Barraza said. “A lot of students are considering graduate school after college, so we hope to support them in any way we can and continue nurturing those connections.”
