Leaving Town?

Whether you live on campus or off, if you’re leaving for any part of the break, take the following steps before you go.

Prepare Your Room or Apartment

  • Unplug all appliances except refrigerators.
  • Remove perishable items from the refrigerator that could go bad.
  • Clean any dirty dishes and containers.
  • Take home or arrange care for pets and plants.
  • Take out trash and recycling.
  • To save on electric bills, you can turn down the heat—just keep it above 50 degrees to protect the pipes.
  • Close and lock your windows and door.

Secure Your Belongings

Prevent Package Theft

  • Have packages delivered to a parcel locker, office or P.O. box.
  • Instruct deliverer to leave packages at back door, if that is an option.
  • Keep delivery area visible and some of your home security measures obvious.
  • Ask the deliverer to obtain a signature upon delivery.
  • Ask a trusted neighbor to hold package.
  • Track packages after ordering so you’ll know when they arrive.

Get Ready for the Road

  • Find out which roads have closures or slowdowns. Give yourself time to navigate increased traffic.
  • If you have a long drive, rotate drivers or take frequent breaks to stay alert.
  • Maintain at least a half-tank of gas. Check your vehicle’s fluid levels (especially windshield washer fluid), belts/hoses and tire pressure.
  • Have provisions in case you get stranded — blankets, water, non-perishable food, first-aid kit, coats, hats, boots and mittens.

Prevent Vehicle Break-Ins

  • Park in a well-lit and populated area.
  • Remove valuables from your vehicle. Hide any that you leave in your car.
  • Never leave your keys in your vehicle and always lock it.
