Thanksgiving Recess is November 24-28

What's open when?

Staying in Town?

All MU Housing will remain open over Thanksgiving Recess.

If you do stay, please know some campus resources will be operating under adjusted hours. Call ahead or check hours online. Tigers who stay and want safety resources at their fingertips can download Mizzou Safe, a free app that will help you report tips to MU Police, send a link to a friend to track your walk home and take other steps to make sure you’re safe during break.

Here’s a quick rundown of the operating hours for some of Mizzou’s most in-demand resources.

Housing

MU Housing staff will continue to be available through the break. Call your hall’s 24/7 on-call support.

  • Excellence, Hawthorn, North/Center, Mark Twain and Rollins desks will be open and accept mail 10 a.m.-6 p.m. throughout break. Mail will be distributed daily to mailboxes. Packages can be retrieved from the open desk in your neighborhood. Normal desk operations resume Dec. 1 at 9 a.m.

Leaving Town?

Whether you live on campus or off, if you’re leaving for any part of the break, take the following steps before you go.

Prepare your room or apartment

  • Unplug all appliances except refrigerators.
  • Remove perishable items from the refrigerator that could go bad.
  • Clean any dirty dishes and containers.
  • Take home or arrange care for pets and plants.
  • Take out trash and recycling.
  • To save on electric bills, you can turn down the heat—just keep it above 50 degrees to protect the pipes.
  • Close and lock your windows and door.

Secure your belongings

Prevent package theft

  • Have packages delivered to a parcel locker, office or P.O. box.
  • Instruct deliverer to leave packages at back door, if that is an option.
  • Keep delivery area visible and some of your home security measures obvious.
  • Ask the deliverer to obtain a signature upon delivery.
  • Ask a trusted neighbor to hold package.
  • Track packages after ordering so you’ll know when they arrive.

Get ready for the road

  • Find out which roads have closures or slowdowns. Give yourself time to navigate increased traffic.
  • If you have a long drive, rotate drivers or take frequent breaks to stay alert.
  • Maintain at least a half-tank of gas. Check your vehicle’s fluid levels (especially windshield washer fluid), belts/hoses and tire pressure.
  • Have provisions in case you get stranded — blankets, water, non-perishable food, first-aid kit, coats, hats, boots and mittens.

Prevent vehicle break-ins

  • Park in a well-lit and populated area.
  • Remove valuables from your vehicle. Hide any that you leave in your car.
  • Never leave your keys in your vehicle and always lock it.
